Visa promises worldwide acceptance, and when you apply for a Visa credit card, you are applying for just that. Countries requiring passports with a validity of at least 3 months beyond the date of intended departure include Azerbaijan , Bosnia and Herzegovina , Montenegro , Nauru , Moldova , and New Zealand Similarly, the EEA countries of Iceland , Liechtenstein , Norway , all European Union countries (except the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom) together with Switzerland also require 3 months validity beyond the date of the bearer’s intended departure unless the bearer is an EEA or Swiss national.

In certain circumstances, it is not possible for the holder of the visa to do this, either because the country does not have a mechanism to prolong visas or, most likely, because the holder of the visa is using a short stay visa to live in a country.

Currently, every nationality entering the UAE needs a visa except citizens of GCC countries (Gulf Cooperation Council: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia) expatriate residents of the GCC (certain nationalities and professions) and British citizens with the right of abode in the UK. The following citizens of Europe also receive visas on arrival citizens of : Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the Vatican.

It is recommended that students do extensive research before deciding to travel with an expired visa as fines can be costly and while they may get to one country, they may end up stuck in a situation where they are unable to return to their original country of study.

Withdrawal is subject to the discretion of the Attorney General however, “an alien applying for admission may, in the discretion of the Attorney General and at any time, be permitted to withdraw the application for admission and depart immediately from the United States.” INA § 235(a)(4).
